Training on the Use of Total Station for Archaeology Department Students

On 16.12.2025, a practical training event on the use of Total Station, which is of great importance in field studies and archaeological documentation processes, was held for the students of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Archaeology. The training was given by the experienced expert Veysel Söğütcepınar, and it was aimed for the students to experience theoretical knowledge and practical application together within the scope of the event.

 

During the training, the basic working principles of the Total Station device, measurement techniques, coordinate determination methods, and practical examples related to its use in archaeological excavation and surface surveys were discussed. Detailed information was provided to the students, especially on digital documentation, precise measurement techniques, and the transfer of data to archaeological drawing and mapping processes. In this respect, the event provided a significant gain for the technical requirements that students will encounter in field studies.

 

During the event, the Head of the Archaeology Department, Prof. Dr. H. Ralf Becks, also gave an informative speech to the students about the place and importance of Total Station use in archaeological research. Prof. Dr. Becks emphasized the role of modern measurement techniques in enhancing the scientific quality of archaeological data and highlighted the contributions of such technological equipment to interdisciplinary studies.

 

After the training, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Veysel Söğütcepınar by the Academic Advisor of the Archaeology Society, Dr. Lecturer Aslı Ünar, for his contributions to the professional development of the Archaeology Department students. This event was evaluated as an important academic activity supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Archaeology's practice-based education approach and efforts to strengthen the technical equipment of students.
