As part of the TÜBİTAK Science Talks program, Dr. Onur YAYLA, a faculty member of the Geography Department at Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, met with students at Antalya Finike Republic Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. In the talk, the topics of mass movements, climate changes, and floods were addressed from a geographical perspective.

During the event, the conditions under which natural processes turn into disasters, the effects of climate change on the environment, and the main factors that increase flood risk were conveyed to the students within a scientific framework. Particularly, the relationship between climate change, which has been felt more distinctly in recent years in areas sensitive to natural disasters like Finike and Kumluca, and extreme weather events, floods, and inundations was emphasized. Additionally, the causes of mass movements and the effects of these processes on the natural environment and human life were explained with examples from the local area.

In his speech, Dr. Onur YAYLA emphasized that geography is not only a discipline that studies landforms and the natural environment; it is also an important field of science in understanding the interaction between humans and nature, assessing environmental risks, and developing solutions to mitigate these risks. The program, which the students followed with interest, continued with a question-and-answer session.

The event, conducted as part of the TÜBİTAK Science Talks aimed at bringing scientific knowledge to society, contributed to increasing students' environmental awareness and their consciousness regarding potential natural disasters that may occur in their surroundings.
