Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of History Faculty Member and Director of Mehmet Akif Ersoy Application and Research Center Prof. Dr. Zafer Gölen delivered a presentation on "Coups and Their Costs in Turkey". Providing information about the development processes and outcomes of coups, Gölen mentioned the economic burden brought by the July 15 coup attempt, stating, “According to calculations, the direct impact of the coup attempt corresponds to approximately 2,821 dollars per capita, and when indirect effects are also calculated, it is said to reach approximately 460 billion dollars. If the coup attempt had not occurred, Turkey's per capita national income could have very easily been over 15 thousand dollars. As a solution, the strengthening of Turkish democracy, the increase of social welfare, and the reduction of income inequality to the lowest possible level are necessary. As Atatürk said, ‘We need only one thing, to be hardworking,’ this statement must be fulfilled and our country must be elevated above the level of contemporary civilizations.” he said.
