GENERAL INFORMATION

Today, a large amount of resources are allocated to studies related to molecular biology and genetics in developed countries, and the work in this field is rapidly progressing day by day. Technological breakthroughs and new discoveries in the world inevitably bring about the need for change in education. In this context, molecular biology education, teaching and research strategies have been developed and implemented in our country, and new departments have been established in universities. Nevertheless, it is a fact that Turkey still has a large deficit in the trained workforce in the field of molecular biology and genetics.

The elective courses offered in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics provide the necessary infrastructure for students who want to specialize in areas such as biotechnology, bioinformatics, developmental biology, enzymology, cancer mechanisms and treatment, gene therapy, drug research and development. With the research projects they will carry out in their senior year, it is ensured that each student increases their knowledge and skills by participating in research under the supervision of a faculty member.

·         Mission-Vision

The goal of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is to train scientific-minded, research and development-focused, competitive at national and international level, expert, quality students. Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics; will contribute to ensuring that our country does not lag behind in developments in this field and meeting the need for trained personnel, and will increase R&D studies with innovative approaches that follow developments in this field.

·         History:

·         Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics; It was opened with the decision of the Higher Education Institution dated 15.01.2015 and numbered 2086.

·         Job Description and Employment Areas:

The interdisciplinary and research-application focused nature of the Molecular Biology and Genetics program creates extensive employment opportunities for graduates in the public and private sectors. In addition to being accepted to graduate programs of universities in the country and abroad, graduates can work in research and development and quality control laboratories of the pharmaceutical development and production, health, environment, food, biotechnology, medical diagnosis and treatment, energy and agriculture sectors, as well as in production, sales and marketing departments.

Education

Our university, being located in the center of the Lakes Region, which is one of the regions with rich biodiversity in our country, allows for easy procurement of biological material and field studies. Our university's Central Research Laboratory and equipped laboratories in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences enhance our students' laboratory skills, and also provide opportunities for them to gain experience by participating in ongoing projects and scientific studies. There are numerous textbooks and supplementary books related to Molecular Biology and Genetics in our university's central library for the sustainability of the department. In addition, numerous international and national journals to which our university subscribes or provides access can be followed through our library.

Bachelor's Program:

Our department's undergraduate program students will graduate as individuals who have a scientific perspective, are research-development oriented, can compete on national and international platforms, are experts in their field, and are of high quality.

Diploma Program:

• Students graduate after 4 academic years (8 semesters) from the undergraduate program.

• Students must pass 240 ECTS and 161 national credit courses to graduate.

• They must pass the courses named "Graduation Project I and Graduation Project II" in the 7th and 8th semesters.

Qualifications of Graduates:

Students who have successfully completed all the courses shown in the department's curriculum, completed the necessary credits for graduation, and fulfilled other conditions specified in the regulations, are awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In addition, they receive the title of “MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS BACHELOR'S GRADUATE” in accordance with European Union harmonization legislation.

TEACHING INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics carries out its educational and teaching activities in 2 amphitheaters, 2 classrooms, and 4 different student laboratories allocated to it in the classrooms of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences located on our university's Istiklal Campus, and at our University's Scientific and Technological Application and Research Center. Currently, there are 4-story faculty member office blocks and 5-story classroom and laboratory blocks in our faculty.
